Creative Listening Task

Idea

What are your associations when listening to different music examples: a film scene, a person or a landscape? Describe them so clearly that others know which music example you are talking about!

Task

We are going to listen to three short pieces of music. While listening imagine either

  • a film scene
  • a person or
  • a landscape.

After listening to each piece, take precise notes of your associations.

Film scene: Where does the film scene take place? Which characters are involved? What is happening? What time of the day is it? Is it hot, cold etc.?

Person: How old is the person you have in mind? Is it female or male? What does the person look like? What kind of character does the person have?

Landscape: What kind of landscape is it? What is the vegetation like? Are there animals? What time of day is it? What season?

After listening to all three pieces you have time again to add associations and make your three descriptions as vivid as possible.

Now read out your notes about one piece of music or use your notes to speak freely about your associations. The rest of the group/class will discuss which piece of music you are talking about and try to come to a conclusion.
